White bikes, white saddles, white stems, and even white handlebars covered in (and completely obscured by) white tape. My new mountain bike - designed to spend most of its life in the dirt - is painted white. Obviously there are problems with this trend. Within 6 months of getting my road bike, the white tape it came with was starting to yellow and deteriorate. I had seen a positive review online of the DSP bar tape and a local shop also recommended it as well, so I decided to give it a try.I have only been using the tape for two months, but at this point I couldn't be happier with the product. In fact, I just ordered more to put on my cyclocross bike. The extra thickness of the DSP tape helps make rough roads more pleasant. Also, the synthetic material remains easy to grip even with damp or sweaty gloves. I can't tell much about durability at this point, but I suspect the extra thickness will lead to a longer life for this bar... I was able to get an orange that matches my bike paint scheme. From there... things went downhill.1) It's expensive... 30-40 bucks a pop. Bar tape is meant to be abused and replaced so it would have to last a LONG time to be worth 3x the other tapes. 2) After getting it I checked online reviews... I know, not the right order to do it in. Several reviewers commented on the fact that is wears terribly. Average I saw was a couple of months. That cool "tacky" feel apparently wears off quickly. 3) This is BAD... after dropping $40 for a set. I unroll it and start to wrap my bars. I get about 5 cm past the hoods and bonk... no more tape. You have to use their, too short, strips on the sides of the hoods because if you do a professional figure-eight wrap you run out of tape at the hoods. Now, understand, there are warnings all over it that you should NOT stretch it... Especially if you need white. This tape has excellent cushioning for the bumpy ride of cross. For summer bar tape the feel is a little rubbery, and I prefer cork. |
